From One Generation to the Next

Like most people, I had a wonderful childhood, but we by no means had a lot. My mother raised six children by herself working a factory job because she never had the chance to finish high school. No matter how bad times were, she always made sure that we had quality clothing and shoes, which was tough when you were trying to buy for a set of twins. This often meant waiting for end of season sales and buying ahead.

A number of the pieces that she bought were what some folks may consider heirloom pieces...those that could be passed from one generation to the next. Thus is the case with my winter coat...yes, MY winter coat. This winter, Kayden will be wearing the dress coat that I wore as a 2 and 3 year old. It is so hard to believe that the coat is 30+ years old, but it is. Below is a before pictures of the coat; it needs a little tlc. The coat is a heather gray wool with a navy piped double breast crest applique and single pleat.

I have plans to replace the buttons, give it a good professional cleaning and last but not least, make a cute navy blue hat to match. I cannot wait to see my sweet girl in MY coat this winter. Unfortunately, mama never got a picture of me in the coat, but how cool would that have been to have those hanging in our home. I am just thankful that she took such good care of the coat and even more thankful that I have a beautiful daughter to share it with!

This is very cute and classy.
Your mother will be so proud when she sees K. in this classic coat. I am sure this will be emotional for you too. I am looking forward to seeing you make a hat to go with it. I have never made a hat either.
My mother has a few of my baby items and things saved as well. I am looking forward to using one of my infant dresses that my mother kept for me.
I can hardly wait to hear how excited your mother will be to see this coat being used now.
The sacrifices that your mom made for all six of you guys was awesome and now you have the opportunity to share some of your past with your daughter! How exciting. Wait for the tears to start coming when you see her in your coat. Memories will come back!

@Tara...thanks for leaving a comment and I too agree that it is pretty cool :)

@Kristy...I don't wanna cry, but I probably will. The most wonderful thing is that Kayden LOVES the coat. She twirls around it and giggles. Once I take the pleat tack out, it will twirl even more. Thanks for your message as well!
